About us

The NIHR Horizon Scanning Research & Intelligence Centre (HSRIC) was established as an independent research team at the University of Birmingham in 1998, and incorporated as a research programme within the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) in 2006. The NIHR horizon scanning contract moved to the Innovation Observatory at Newcastle University on 1st April 2017.

For almost 20 years the HSRIC team supplied information to key NHS policy and decision-makers and research funders about emerging health technologies that may have a significant impact on patients or the provision of health services in the near future. HSRIC was also active internationally, hosting the Secretariat for the International Network on New and Emerging Technologies (EuroScan) for 19 years, and being a member of the International Network of Agencies for Health Technology Assessment.
