Dr Claire Packer – Director
Claire Packer is a Clinical Senior Lecturer in Public Health Medicine and has been Director of the NIHR Horizon Scanning Research & Intelligence Centre since 1998.
Dr Derek Ward – Co-Director & Medical Advisor
Derek Ward is a Clinical Senior Lecturer in Public Health and has been a Director of the NIHR Horizon Scanning Research & Intelligence Centre since 2010. He also acts as a medical adviser with a focus on pharmaceutical technologies and previously led the Centre's pharmaceutical sub-team.
Professor Andrew Stevens – Professor of Public Health
Andrew Stevens is Professor of Public Health and has been Director of the NIHR Horizon Scanning Research & Intelligence Centre since 1998. Andrew inputs to strategic development and the research programme.
Dr Ali Cook – Associate Director
Ali Cook has been at the NIHR Horizon Scanning Research & Intelligence Centre since 2001 and is head of the MedTech team.
Dr Sue Simpson – Associate Director
Sue Simpson is an Associate Director in the NIHR Horizon Scanning Research & Intelligence Centre responsible for the work of the research and reviews team. She has published a number of papers in the field of early awareness and alert systems and contributed to workshops on the subject.
Sue is also a member of the secretariat of EuroScan – the International Information Network on New and Emerging Health Technologies, a collaborative network of member agencies for the exchange of information on important emerging new drugs, devices, procedures, programmes, and settings in health care.
Mrs Kathryn Miles – Associate Director
In September 2015 Kathryn Miles took on the role of pharmaceutical team leader at the NIHR Horizon Scanning Research & Intelligence Centre (NIHR HSRIC) leading the team to identify pharmaceuticals likely to have an impact on the NHS in the next three years. This builds on her previous 13 years of experience in horizon scanning as an analyst. Since 2012, Kathryn has jointly led the HSRIC Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) and Engagement strategy presenting findings at HTAi conference in Washington 2014 and NIHR INVOLVE conference 2014.
Dr Lucy Doos – Research Fellow
Lucy has joined the NIHR HSRIC in February 2014 and she currently leads on research within the centre. She has extensive experiences in both qualitative and quantitative research methods. Her research interests lie in the areas of public health and health services research.
Dr Sandhya Duggal – ESRC Research Fellow
Sandhya works on an ESRC funded project called REGenableMED. The study is concerned with exploring regenerative medicine and its development and implementation, with a focus on the analysis of emergent value systems and health service readiness.
Dr Luan Linden-Phillips – Senior Analyst
Luan leads on external engagement with the pharmaceutical industry and other horizon scanning organisations across the UK for the NIHR HSRIC Pharma team. She also co-chairs the UK PharmaScan User Group, a joint Department of Health and ABPI project, which is an essential tool for the managed entry of medicines into the NHS.
Mrs Joanna Smith – Senior Analyst
Joanna leads on external engagement with the MedTech industry, as well as other organisations and collaborators including the NIHR Health Technology Cooperatives (HTCs). She is also a member of the Trauma HTC External Advisory Group (HEAG) at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham.
Dr Sara Trevitt – Senior Analyst
Sara works as a senior analyst in the reviews team.
Mrs Zaheda Teladia – Senior Analyst
Zaheda Teladia is a part of the research and reviews team. She joined the NIHR HSRIC in September 2008 after graduating from the University of Birmingham in Biomedical Materials Science (BSc Hons).

April Coombe is an analyst and member of the research and reviews team. She is an experienced health information professional and manager having worked on many projects including the development of NHS Evidence.
Mrs Muna Mohamed – Analyst
Muna joined the NIHR Horizon Scanning Research & Intelligence Centre in November 2014 as a Research Associate (Analyst) and is a member of the drugs team.
